Snark Squad Pod #018 – The Last Airbender with Ceri Riley

Previously: We watched Avatar: The Last Airbender and we loved it so much. So, so much.

Marines: Last week, we discussed Avatar: The Last Airbender, the precious and beautiful Nickelodeon animated series. This week, we discuss the travesty that is M. Night Shymalan’s 2010 adaptation. The use of the word travesty is kind of a spoiler, but it’s a neat episode to listen to even if you haven’t seen the movie, mostly because we have such strong feelings of dislike for this as a movie and as an adaptation.

Contrary to what was said in this podcast, no Ceris were hurt or kidnapped during the making of this episode, but we are joined again by Ceri Riley, writer and editor for SciShow and Crash Course Film, editorial assistant for Monstress.

As a note, I made a comment about colorism in regards to Shaun Toub as Iroh. I ended it by using the term “whitewashing” in regards to Toub, who is an Iranian-American actor. I just wanted to clarify that my point was indeed about colorism in terms of the brown aggressor trope and the most sympathetic villain. I apologize for any poor word choice there!

I'm a 30-something south Floridan who loves the beach but cannot swim. Such is my life, full of small contradictions and little trivialities. My main life goals are never to take life too seriously, but to do everything I attempt seriously well. After that, my life goals devolve into things like not wearing pants and eating all of the Zebra Cakes in the world. THE WORLD.
