Snark Squad Pod #060 – Riverdale, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and Sophomore Slumps

Previously: We had mixed feelings about the cinematic cotton candy experience of Alita: Battle Angel

Sweeney: First things first: we recorded this episode on February 24th, prior to Luke Perry’s tragic passing, which is why we do not mention it in this episode. I have fond childhood memories of 90210 (Brenda & Dylan 4ever!) and feel a little like I grew up watching Luke Perry, so his death is more than a little surreal. Our sincere condolences go out to his family and friends – as well as any fans who are struggling with this one.

There’s no non-awkward way to pivot from that, so we’re just going to look this one straight in the face and say “and now for a completely inelegant transition.”

This is where I open yet another podcast blog post with yet another explanation of our choices. You may have seen this in your feed and said “you guys, these shows do not have anything to do with each other what are you doing?” and we would have said “you’re right but just go with it, ok BE COOL SODAPOP.”

Last year we covered 5 shows that, at the time of our recording, had only 1 completed season. We put up a Patreon poll asking which of those 5 shows we should revisit for a season 2 episode. That poll ended in a tie. We have talked for a while now about ways to blend our MEDIA and TOPIC formats into MEDIA + TOPIC and rather than doing the sane thing and splitting this into two episodes or just breaking the tie ourselves, we decided to run with the tie and do the thing.

For this experiment we are joined by our good friend Miriam who previously joined us to talk Star Wars: The Last Jedi and also watches both of these shows. Miriam is smart and thoughtful and makes lots of great videos about climate change on her YouTube channel.

Find out how well this experiment worked out. (And let us know in the comments or on our Discord)

For those of you watching and reading along, here is our planned upcoming media in the order they’ll be released: The Umbrella Academy, MCU Phase 3 (Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, Ant-Man & The Wasp, and Captain Marvel), and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms by George R. R. Martin (ASoIaF novellas), and The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman.

Nicole Sweeney

Nicole is the co-captain of Snark Squad and these days she spends most of her time editing podcasts. She spends too much time on Twitter and very occasionally vlogs and blogs. In her day job she's a producer, editor, director, and sometimes host of educational YouTube channels. She loves travel, maps, panda gifs, and semicolons. Writing biographies stresses her out; she crowd sourced this one years ago and has been using a version of it ever since. She would like to thank Twitter for their help.
