Snark Squad Pod #080 – The Amber Spyglass by Philip Pullman

Previously: We chatted with our friend Lainey Kress about The Mummy, romance tropes, and conspiracy theories.

Sweeney: This week we are finishing our journey through Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy. We recorded this episode just a few days after the newest trailer for the BBC/HBO adaptation was released at SDCC, so we also got to (very briefly) gush about that.

This is perhaps my favorite book in the series, mostly because it features my favorite quest of the series. I also have a big soft spot for Mary Malone’s weird side quest (and oh my god I hope the TV show lives long enough to do it justice) so this book is deeply MY SHIT, but it’s got some strong hit or miss elements, so Mari and Connor are here to talk me through the bits that didn’t quite work for them. (I am generally not having any of it, but I left it in for all of you to nod along as you see fit.)

As with our episodes on The Golden Compass/Northern Lights and The Subtle Knife, we are joined by Connor O’Brien who also shares his wonderful bookish thoughts on his YouTube channel.

Hear everything we had to say about the conclusion to this trilogy:

Nicole Sweeney

Nicole is the co-captain of Snark Squad and these days she spends most of her time editing podcasts. She spends too much time on Twitter and very occasionally vlogs and blogs. In her day job she's a producer, editor, director, and sometimes host of educational YouTube channels. She loves travel, maps, panda gifs, and semicolons. Writing biographies stresses her out; she crowd sourced this one years ago and has been using a version of it ever since. She would like to thank Twitter for their help.
