Snark Squad Pod #081 – The Americans (2013-2018)

Previously: We finished the His Dark Materials trilogy & had a lot of feelings about that bittersweet ending.

Sweeney: In the earliest days of the podcast (which you can revisit as we upload the show to YouTube) Mari and I were assigning media back and forth to one another with our big podcast planning spreadsheet. While that format died, the spreadsheet lives on. One of the first things I added to that spreadsheet – either just when talking about stuff I loved, or after our anti-heroes episode – was FX’s The Americans which is possibly one of the best TV shows I’ve ever had the good fortune to watch as it aired. For 6 years I lived with the week on week tension of whether fictional KGB agents Philip & Elizabeth Jennings would live to spy another day.

And somehow when we were plotting out our July schedule, Mari finally decided to schedule this recording and inevitably wound up watching all 75 episodes in about a week and a half.

When I tweeted about recording an episode of the show, I was fortunate to find a volunteer in Joey Lewandowski, a long time internet friend who also went on the full real time journey with this show. Aside from being a big fan of The Americans, Joey also runs the Cage Club Podcast Network, which includes other friends of the show Reel Bad (which I was just on) and The Contenders, as well as a host of other shows like 2 Fast 2 Forever (hint, hint, this might be relevant for next week’s episode).

Listen to this week’s episode to hear all of our thoughts on this complicated marriage, raising first generation Americans who don’t really know they’re first generation Americans, and that epic series finale:

Nicole Sweeney (all posts)

Nicole is the co-captain of Snark Squad and these days she spends most of her time editing podcasts. She spends too much time on Twitter and very occasionally vlogs and blogs. In her day job she's a producer, editor, director, and sometimes host of educational YouTube channels. She loves travel, maps, panda gifs, and semicolons. Writing biographies stresses her out; she crowd sourced this one years ago and has been using a version of it ever since. She would like to thank Twitter for their help.
