Marines: If you’ve spent any amount of time around these parts, you might know that my main hobby is having hobbies. The last few years, I’ve been running and planning BookNet Fest, a two-day convention for book lovers who congregate online. Unsurprisingly, planning content for that has melted into planning content for Snark Squad. There is a lot of overlap and a lot of times they inspire each other.
We explain the sequence of events a bit in the episode, but basically, we had an Authorial Intent panel at BookNet Fest 2019, which Nicole moderated. She loved the panel and we thought it would be a great conversation to have again, this time for the podcast. We invited our dear friend and BookNet Fest speaker Deboki from okidokiboki to talk to us about the author’s presence, brand, and adding content after-the-fact.
Show Notes:
- I Like To Watch: Arguing My Way Through the TV Revolution by Emily Nussbaum
- Deboki’s wonderful video “A List of Petty Book Grievances” (the petty ones are very funny but she ends on the very not at all petty one about white authors avoiding writing non-white characters)
- Fandom’s Great Divide, also by Emily Nussbaum. This piece is in the book, but Nicole promised a link to this specifically, so here you go.
We’d love to chat with you about this episode! How do you interact with the author’s intent? How important is canon to you?
