Previously: We gathered to discuss apocalypse media & wound up talking about contingency plans and watching the world burn.

Sweeney: A few weeks ago? Months ago? What is time in 2019? SOME TIME AGO: the internet was excitedly discussing trailer for The King mostly, I think, because it featured noted weirdo soft boys from two eras, Robert Pattinson & Timothée Chalamet. Meanwhile, we were planning our media calendar for the rest of the year. We had a few things we knew we wanted to do and then we also had space. Around this time Mari was recovering from BookNet Fest and I was drowning in work on pilot shows and so we were also trying to plan and end to 2019 that was easier for us – more movies and tropes, less sprawling fantasy epics. When we are looking at gaps we sometimes look at the streaming services to see what stuff they have coming out that aligns with those gaps.
And this, my friends, is the full explanation of how and why we came to be discussing The King a thing which, on paper, in no way appears to be something either of us would enjoy or would think “hell yeah, gotta watch that.”
The other reason this came to be, though, is that when Mari suggested it (for the very solid reason of “it comes out at the right time and people are talking about it”) I was like, “oh Devyn is literally studying Shakespeare in grad school,” and when I asked Devyn about joining us, she agreed. In retrospect we should have just had Devyn talk for an hour and then called it a day. Devyn previously joined us to discuss Daisy Jones & The Six and you can find her being smart & charming on Twitter or on her bookstagram account: @effthecanon.
One final note is that we should have let Devyn talk for an hour and called it a day because we also had a delightful recording failure on my end, and my attempt to save it also wound up making it quite a bit shorter. Also possibly a bit more awkward, so this note is here mostly in case anyone says to themselves “something about this sounds off” and comes to the site to see why. This is why.
Enjoy Devyn being brilliant while we struggle for words on this week’s episode:
