Snark Squad Pod #041 – My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante

Previously: We watched 9 episodes of The Dragon Prince and it wasn’t enough to figure our how we truly felt.

Marines: I first read this work, translated to English by Ann Goldstein, in 2016. After a mixed experience, I went on to read the rest of the Neapolitan Novels as well as all the limited information available about the anonymous author, Elena Ferrante. I loved this series so much, despite the rocky start. I definitely had Ferrante Fever.

Needless to say that when HBO announced it was adapting the series, I was pretty damn excited. I added the show to our list of things to cover and went the extra mile of making my BFF also read the books. You know, it’s what we do.

The first time I read this book, I buddy-read it with Max. He and I met through BookTube. These days, he’s most active on Instagram and Twitter, where he offers thoughtful media commentary, amazing music recommendations and quality Enneagram content. He was the natural choice to invite on to talk about the sometimes slow, sometimes great start found in My Brilliant Friend.

Listen to Max and I gush about this series and try really hard to convince Nicole to love it. I’m only half kidding:

I'm a 30-something south Floridan who loves the beach but cannot swim. Such is my life, full of small contradictions and little trivialities. My main life goals are never to take life too seriously, but to do everything I attempt seriously well. After that, my life goals devolve into things like not wearing pants and eating all of the Zebra Cakes in the world. THE WORLD.
