Snark Squad Pod #043 – The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

Previously: We revisited the Buffy Halloween episodes and had a lot of feelings & nostalgia.

Sweeney: It is now a week after Halloween, but we hope you’ll entertain just one more week of spooky fun. In September we put up a poll on our Patreon asking our patrons which 2018 Netflix show we should cover on the podcast and the narrow winner was The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

I had been looking forward to this show since it was announced a year ago. I heard good/interesting things about the comics the series is based on, and I was eager for a potential Riverdale crossover. (This was back at the beginning of S2, before Riverdale made a series of writing choices that made me feel personally attacked by its writers room, but I digress.) Plus, Kiernan Shipka! I’ve never seen Mad Men, but she’s always a delight in Democracy Diva posts, so I was primed to love her. Plus, I’m down for all things coming of age and witchy. tl;dr version is that I was hyped for this.

Marines, on the other hand, hates all things occult, and has a very low scare threshold, so while I was going to watch this regardless, she was only watching because it was a podcast assignment.

But watch it we did, and to help us out, we called in some witchy (Riverdale watching) friends of the podcast, Taylor Behnke and Ceri Riley. Taylor has a YouTube channel where she tells lovely and insightful personal stories. She was also our guest for our Brooklyn Nine-Nine episode. Ceri is a regular on the podcast, but when she’s not watching stuff we ask her to watch, she’s a script editor for SciShow and co-host of the SciShow Tangents podcast.

We had mixed feelings about the show, from it’s themes & aesthetic, to it’s attempts to tackle larger social issues. Find out what we all thought on this week’s episode:

Nicole is the co-captain of Snark Squad and these days she spends most of her time editing podcasts. She spends too much time on Twitter and very occasionally vlogs and blogs. In her day job she's a producer, editor, director, and sometimes host of educational YouTube channels. She loves travel, maps, panda gifs, and semicolons. Writing biographies stresses her out; she crowd sourced this one years ago and has been using a version of it ever since. She would like to thank Twitter for their help.
