Sweeney: The original premise of the podcast was Mari and I recommending media back and forth to each other. We’ve gotten away from that, a little, as we only have so many recommendations, and we get swayed but what’s actually relevant in the world of pop culture. For this week’s episode we decided to do a bit of a mix of internally and externally decided media. We each named two books and asked our Patrons to choose one for us to read and discuss.
This is how we wound up talking about this anti-hero book that Mari read a few years ago and loved, in spite of her aversion to anti-heroes. V. E. Schwab’s Vicious is the story of two brilliant friends who find a way to give themselves superpowers and wind up enemies. This was a tremendously interesting conversation to have because regardless of how you feel about the book (our reactions were somewhat mixed) there was a ton to discuss in terms of its ideas about villains and anti-heroes and morality.
We are joined this week by Kat O’Keeffe who, in addition to being a fan of the book, is an insightful gem of a human being who shares her thoughts and experiences with writing and books over on Twitter and YouTube.
