Sweeney: This week we are finishing our journey through Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy. We recorded this episode just a few days after the newest trailer for the BBC/HBO adaptation was released at SDCC, so we also got to (very briefly) gush about that.
This is perhaps my favorite book in the series, mostly because it features my favorite quest of the series. I also have a big soft spot for Mary Malone’s weird side quest (and oh my god I hope the TV show lives long enough to do it justice) so this book is deeply MY SHIT, but it’s got some strong hit or miss elements, so Mari and Connor are here to talk me through the bits that didn’t quite work for them. (I am generally not having any of it, but I left it in for all of you to nod along as you see fit.)
As with our episodes on The Golden Compass/Northern Lights and The Subtle Knife, we are joined by Connor O’Brien who also shares his wonderful bookish thoughts on his YouTube channel.
