Snark Squad Pod #126 – A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder (2024–)

A Netflix show adaptation of a popular YA book? You should not be surprised to find Snark Squad at the scene of the crime. We invited good friend of the pod, Paige Gunning, to join us this episode. In addition to having great insight into books and publishing, Paige is one of our friends most likely to enjoy a soapy teen drama and is currently living in London. Very fitting, if we do say so ourselves.

Jessica Jones S01 E01 – Pilot WIN.

We start straight away with the credits, which I love. Maybe I'm just determined to love this. YAY CREDITS.
Stephanie: I loved them too. The colors! The music! I may have gone back to watch them again... twice.
Mari: To emphasize the dark!Veronica Mars (S: My first thought too.) vibe I'm getting right off the bat, the episode starts with Jessica Jones's voiceover: New York may be the city that never sleeps, but it sure does sleep around. We see a man and a woman sneaking down Adultery Alley.

Supernatural S05 E20 – Who the eff is this?

The previouslies take us right back to Jessica, followed by a reminder about the Croatoan virus and Crowley, so clearly we're in for a good time.
We open in a medical research lab, full of lab rats and lab monkeys. A janitor mops the floor as two medical researchers in lab coats talk about how it seems crazy to jump straight to human testing when neither of them have seen the vaccine yet. They study the monkeys and jot down notes as they talk. One looks like a short version of Barack Obama, and it's very disconcerting. The janitor turns towards them and says that he's seen the vaccine. They're all "The fuck?", and he grins that he's running an experiment of his own.

Doctor Who S03 E12 – Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain

An alleyway somewhere in London. "VOTE SAXON" posters are plastered all over the walls. A blue swirly vortex appears and out pop Jack, Martha and the Doctor, courtesy of Jack's wrist cuff. They all immediately make NYARGH-y sounds because time travel without a capsule is horrible. Jack's impressed that they made it to the right place and the right time, but the Doctor says "That wasn't luck. That was me."

The OC S03 E11: Operation Free Marissa.

First off, like so many guest recappers, I have to admit this is the only episode of the O.C. I've ever seen. Everything I know about the show comes from reading Snark Squad posts, which basically means I'm pretty sure this is a show about Sandy Cohan's Eyebrows being the paradigm of good parenting, and also trying to interpret what Ryan and Marissa's expressions mean. (M: Damn, we've done a good job of capturing the essentials!)
ANYWAY, we open with the staring foursome drinking “mocktails” and having a meta conversation about winter break and the show – I mean school – starting back up.

The OC S03 E03 – The Eyebrows Can Only Take So Much

The Core Four are sitting in the diner, with Summer lamenting Ryan and Marissa’s expulsions from Harbor. Ryan and Marissa try to tell her it won’t be that bad, but Summer says it will be for Seth, seeing how before Ryan, he was bullied by people who called him “Death Breath Seth,” and Marissa’s like, uh, YOU called him that. Summer ignores that and says this was supposed to be the best year ever. All Ryan and Marissa want is to go back to school, but Summer tells them it’ll be okay as long as they stick together.

Dawson’s Creek S03 E09 – Strictly ballroom

We open, as always, in the Shrine o' Spielberg where Pacey and Jen are making out. DUDE, NO. Who breaks into their best friend's house (although given the ladder, it's not REALLY breaking in, I guess??) to make out in their bed? Gross.
Democracy Diva: Also, pick a sexier room than the Shrine O'Spielberg to make out in. Avoid having E.T. watch you do the nasty at all costs.
K: Truth.
Anyway, the making out stops because they agree that they still have zero sexual interest in the other person. They discuss their past history and how everything should be falling into place because they came prepared (Pacey flashes condoms) and picked the perfect location (ugh).

The OC S02 E09 – Use your words, people.

So I'm finally guest blogging for Snark Squad. I feel accomplished. That probably tells you all you need to know about me.
I love The O.C. and on first watch, I was completely #teamryan. On a later watch, #teamseth. So when I watch now, I find myself conflicted. It's a hard place to be. I'll keep a tally as I go to see where I'm at today.
Marines: This is kind of how my Myers Briggs has shifted a little as I get older. Like that, but way more awesome.
Sweeney: It says a lot about how we're not this show's target age demographic anymore that you're contextualizing it with Myers Briggs.

Supernatural S02 E13 – Avenging Angels

First things first, this is the second of three episodes in this season that's named after a Led Zeppelin song. I know Dean loves his Zeppelin, but that's a little over the top. ANYWAY. Providence, Rhode Island. A junkie-looking young woman sits watching TV, surrounded by creepy-as-shit angel statues. She flicks from the Drew Carey Show to a televangelist, wibbling about how God is with you. She turns the TV off, and the lights flicker. The TV switches on again. The televangelist asks if she can hear the glory. The lights continue to flicker and the room starts to shake. She stares in shock and awe at a white light that appears.
FLAME ON!

Pretty Little Liars S04 E05 – Memory Lane

We begin the episode with what I thought was a scream, but is actually sirens. Hanna's eyes pop open. She calls out to her mom and goes downstairs to find her asleep on the patio off the kitchen, all bundled up. As Hanna explains that she had a nightmare, Ashley sits up and reveals that her hair has fallen out and she's wearing an orange jumpsuit. Fortunately this is just some sort of inception nightmare-within-a-nightmare, because Ashley I-hide-my-stolen-money-in-pasta-boxes Marin wouldn't last a day on Orange is the New Black. Back in Hanna's bed, she wakes up for real, screaming, and her mom comes to her. Hanna says she's fine and doesn't want to talk about her prison mom nightmare.
SHHHHH!

Pretty Little Liars S03 E23 – Definitely crazy.

Spencer is sitting alone in the common area at Radley when the PLLs drop by. It appears to be well past visiting hours, but Radley's just making shit up as she goes. Anyway, the PLLs dropped by to let her know that they have good news, but they have a really interesting interpretation of "good news" because that news is that the cops found a camper's body. I mean, yay for Toby, but also sucks for that camper and his family, you know?
Lorraine: Plus, they seem to have missed the part where Spencer is in there because she saw Toby's body. "Good news, your boyfriend is alive, but you are DEFINITELY crazy!" Thanks, girls! Nice way to start the episode.
